Skoutari is a picturesque Laconian village, built on a hillside over viewing the deep blue Laconian Golf, surrounded by Olive grows.
Until the 6th century, the region was called Vordona. From the 8th century, it changed to Skoutari, deriving from the Latin word Scutum, which means “shield”. The Byzantinians called it so because of the natural fortified situation of it.
The History goes back to 2500 B.C.! The two villages “Asini” and “Vordona” flourished here. Skoutari developed in the middle of the 18th century.
At this heroical village, took place the scarification of the Kalkandis family, who, in 1780, fought and perished in their tower . Attacked by the Ottoman hordes of Ozman - Hatzi , gave time to the Maniates to get organized and vanquish at Trikefalia.
Today, Skoutari is a quiet Maniot village, which maintains the local picturesque architecture, with control and respect to the tradition. Walking its alleys, you will discover the Byzantine churches and the tower-houses, standing proudly, still waiting the trumpet call of pirate Barbarossa, who especially loved Mani.
